Living in New York City, I am blessed with the opportunity to always go to concerts, especially free concerts. That’s why when Gary Clark Jr. gave a free show at Central Park’s Summerstage on Saturday, July 28, I felt that it would have been a crime not to go. I had been a fan of Gary Clark Jr.’s music for some time now and going to his concert only reaffirmed his musical genius for me.

Let me start out my saying that on that Saturday afternoon, there was a rainstorm of apocalyptic proportions. A sea of umbrellas consumed the muggy outdoor venue in the heart of Manhattan’s backyard. It was not the greatest of concert weathers in the least. Nevertheless, when Clark swaggered up on stage, guitar casually in hand, and started to jam, the rain did not seem to matter much any more.

Gary Clark Jr came alive when he started performing. His soulful voice was only amplified by the passion and skill with which he played his guitar. His lyrics touched the core of every audience member in the venue. You could tell because no one would dare take their eyes off of him.

With every song that swiftly came and went, the crowd was overcome with excitement. Then, a magical thing occurred. Just when everyone seemed to get accustomed to the gloomy weather, the sun began to creep up behind the grey clouds and shine its much-awaited rays right on the crowd. Whether that was a coincidence or not, I have no idea. I would like to think that the almighty combination of the blissful sounds of Gary’s guitar and the subsequent roar of the vibrant audience had something to do with it.

Haven’t heard a lot of tunes like this lately. I’m a big fan of contemporary blues. This could easily fall into the adult-alternative or rock buckets, but the tone this dude has and the soul imbued in the shred at the end make me look at this track from a blues perspective. I’m a little ashamed of myself for not hearing about this guy sooner, and whatever he’s doing I hope he does more of it. Scope Bright Lights by Gary Clark Jr. Dope record.

- You can hold your head up high, stick your chest out and proudly say ‘I’m goofy’

- You have a countdown to the next season

- You have enough snowboarding related gear to start your own second hand snowboard shop

- You get a job that you get weekends off to ride

- Your pass photo is better than your school photo

- You keep your board in the living room for decoration

- On a powder day you somehow come down with the flu and have to call in sick

- You wax your board in the middle of summer

- You look way cooler than the people with one plank on each foot

- People give you funny looks because of your effing gnarly goggle tan

- You have weird as snowboarding related dreams in the middle of summer

- You have trouble getting out of bed at 7 for school but have no problem getting up at 5:30 to shred

- You look at every pile of snow on the side of the road and think of how you could hit it

- You consider buying a $4000 snowmaker

- You see a slow sign and choose to ollie or bonk it instead of slowing down

- You’ve converted (or at least tried to convert) skiers to becoming snowboarders

- You’re burning up in the midst of 20 degrees fahrenheit

- You practice 1’s and 3’s in your living room

- You use your goggles as sunglasses in the summer

- You have 10 times as many snowboarding magazines as you do textbooks in your locker

-There is nothing you dread more than explaining what a cab double cork 1260 melon is to your friend who doesn’t snowboard

- Your movie collection is 90% shred vids and 10% actual movies

- You’re just standing around and doing ollies even without a board

- You check yourself out in the mirror and you immediately motion a frontside boardslide

- You have a playlist for jibbing and a playlist for bombing

- You stand sideways

-You sleep on floors in cramped resort hotel rooms

- You get up early and go to sleep late

- You wreck yourself day in, day out and yet you stomp that one trick or find that one line that keeps you coming back
